Rep. Peter Welch today voted in favor of the COPS Improvements Act, a bill that would bolster community policing efforts by hiring 50,000 police officers over the next five years. The measure, which was cosponsored by Welch, passed the House this afternoon on a vote of 342 to 78.The bill, which is designed to reinvigorate Community Oriented Policing Services grants, could result in the hiring of as many as 109 police officers in Vermont, according to congressional estimates.

Peter Welch joined House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at an Earth Day news conference today recognizing the success of the Green the Capitol initiative and calling on lawmakers to further reduce their energy use. In its first 18 months, the initiative has reduced Congress' carbon emissions by 74 percent.Shortly after taking office in 2007, Welch became the first Member of Congress to make his office carbon neutral and has since become a leader in the effort to create a 21 century energy policy. Welch, a vice chair and founding member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition, was invited to the Earth Day event to speak about his success in reducing his office's carbon footprint.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution Wednesday morning honoring Captain Richard Phillips of Underhill, Vt., his crewmembers aboard the Maersk Alabama and the United States Navy personnel who secured his release.The Welch-authored resolution, which was cosponsored by 87 Members of Congress, passed on a voice vote.
