Welch Unveils Bipartisan Initiative to Match Skilled Veterans with Good Jobs
RUTLAND, Vt.— At the headquarters of a Rutland business committed to hiring veterans, Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT) today unveiled his bipartisan legislation that would provide a one-time $5,000 tax incentive to businesses who hire veterans serving since September 11, 2001.
Welch made the announcement at Casella Waste Management, a veteran-friendly Vermont employer. Six percent of Casella's work force are veterans.
Welch was joined by Vermont’s Adjutant General Steven Cray, a representative of Casella, Rutland Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donahue, David Wheel of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, and veteran Jon Skates who served in the U.S. Navy from 2007 to 2012. Skates is an employee of Casella in the Operations Manager Trainee Program.
“The most effective way to integrate returning veterans into their communities is to ensure they have a good job and access to support services and quality health care,” Rep. Peter Welch said. “Post-9/11 veterans face the highest unemployment of any group of veterans. Yet, when I travel around Vermont I hear over and over from employers in need of skilled employees. My bill is a win-win that will match skilled veterans looking for work with good businesses in need of well-trained workers. I applaud Casella and all employers for their commitment to hiring veterans and giving them a boost as they return home.”
For a business to qualify for the tax credit, the veteran must have served on federal active duty for a period of more than 180 days after September 11, 2001 or been discharged or released from active duty for a service-connected disability. Over 5,000 Vermont veterans and almost 4,000 current or former Guard members meet the criteria of this legislation.
The Jobs for Veterans Act (H.R. 4660) is sponsored Welch and Rep. Peter King (R-NY).
