Welch Appointed to House Intelligence Committee

Reappointed to Democratic leadership team; Secures key subcommittee assignments on powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee

Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) was appointed today by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which oversees the federal government’s seventeen intelligence agencies and offices, including the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the intelligence functions of the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Justice, State and Energy. The committee is also investigating Russia’s attempt to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve at such a momentous time in our nation’s history,” said Welch. “This committee serves as a steward for the American people in overseeing the country’s most sensitive intelligence programs. And we have a solemn responsibility to protect our national security, as well as our privacy and civil liberties. I look forward to working with Chairman Adam Schiff to reinvigorate the committee and get to work for the American people.”

Welch was also reappointed to the House Democratic leadership team, serving as a Chief Deputy Whip in the new Congress and on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee which makes recommendations on committee appointments and policy.

In addition, Welch is returning to the powerful House Committee on Energy and Commerce, whose jurisdiction includes health care, energy, environment, telecommunications, technology, consumer protection, and trade.  Yesterday he was selected by committee colleagues to serve on the following subcommittees:

Rep. Welch was elected in November to his seventh term representing Vermont in the House of Representatives.
