Welch Announces Convenient Opportunity to Expedite Border Crossing and Airport Screening
WINOOSKI, Vt. – At the start of the busy summer traveling season, Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT) today announced a more convenient opportunity for Vermonters to enroll in a program to expedite security screening at airports and across designated points of entry along the US-Canadian border, including Highgate.
At the request of Rep. Welch, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will host enrollment events in Burlington on June 20 and 21 for Vermonters interested in enrolling in the NEXUS and TSA PreCheck programs. The regular process for enrolling in these programs requires applicants to travel to Derby or out of state for required in-person interviews.
Welch made the announcement at Twincraft Skincare, where employees who frequently travel for work will benefit from this local enrollment location.
“We all hate travel delays at the airport and border. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, there’s nothing more frustrating than waiting in screening lines for hours,” Rep. Welch said. “I applaud Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency for bringing NEXUS and PreCheck enrollment to Burlington for two days so Vermonters have more convenient access to expedited travel programs.”
The NEXUS program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing by United States and Canadian officials at dedicated processing lanes at designated northern border ports of entry. With NEXUS, travelers will receive expedited entrance into both Canada and the U.S., eligibility to apply for expedited entry benefits in other countries, reduced wait times, participation in TSA’s PreCheck and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority’s expedited security screening program, CATSA

“Canada is our most valued trading partner and as we seek to grow opportunities for both Vermont companies and residents through our relationship with our neighbor to the north, quick and efficient travel across the border is incredibly important. We appreciate Congressman Welch's efforts to expand access to the NEXUS program through events like this week's since the program is an important tool for simplifying cross border travel,” said Tom Torti, President, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce.
"Nexus is a wonderful way to make traveling to and from Canada easy and efficient. As someone who travels back and forth across the Canadian border, I highly recommend it. Canada is our friend and ally and crossing the border should reflect that relationship. Nexus practically and symbolically represents the positive relationship between our two countries. It promotes both trade and good will between the U.S. and Canada,” said Peter Ashe, President, Twincraft Soap.
Interested Vermonters must pre-register online to secure an appointment for an interview. Walk-in applicants who do not have an approved appointment will not be processed. Applications can be found at https://goes-app.cbp.dhs.gov.
