Leahy, Sanders And Welch Spotlight Friday Deadline For Vermont Dairy Farmers To Enroll In The Dairy Margin Coverage Program
(TUESDAY, Sept. 17, 2019) -- Senator Patrick Leahy (D), Senator Bernie Sanders (I) and Representative Peter Welch (D) are reminding Vermont dairy farmers that signup for the Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program ends this Friday, Sept. 20, giving producers just a few more days to enroll.
As a result of the low dairy prices early this year, signing up for the DMC program now will assure most farmers of payments this year. More than 500 eligible Vermont dairy producers have already signed up and received payments, but some producers have yet to enroll, now with only a few days left. The DMC program was created in the 2018 Farm Bill as a key improvement on the dairy safety net, but in order to benefit, farmers must enroll. Leahy, a leading member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, shepherded the Vermont Delegation’s efforts in last year’s Farm Bill to include the ability to insure larger margins, and substantial discounts to premiums paid by small farms.
In a joint statement, Leahy, Sanders and Welch said: “Vermont producers can enroll now to be assured of net payments that will greatly exceed their required premiums for this year. At times when farmers receive a fair price for their milk, the DMC program is automatically sidelined, but it is an important risk management tool for years like 2019, when the price falls too low.”
To enroll in the DMC program farmers must contact their county Farm Service Agency (FSA) office by September 20, 2019. Contact information is available from the FSA State Office at 356 Mountain View Drive, Colchester, (802) 658-2803, https://www.fsa.usda.gov/state-offices/Vermont.
