Fox 44: 'Rep. Welch Wants Federal Help To Stop Foreign Scams'
Vermont's congressman wants the federal government to help Vermonters who were scammed out of thousands of dollars last year.
Democrat Peter Welch spoke about the bill at the Champlain Senior Center Monday.
The measure would create an office within the Federal Trade Commission to educate the public, especially seniors, about the dangers of foreign phone scams.
Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell says the measure could help because individual states can't go after thieves.
"I certainly can't in Jamaica or Canada or any other of the international scams. The reality is we got hundreds of Vermonters who are attempted to be scammed each year," said Sorrell.
Welch says right now no one has co-sponsored the bill, but he believes it will gain bi-partisan support.
