Spotlight on Farms As a founder and co-chair of the Congressional Dairy Farmers Caucus, launched in July 2009, Rep. Welch has worked hard to help Vermont’s dairy farmers survive the ongoing dairy price crisis. Welch testified before the House Agriculture Committee in July about the struggles facing Vermont’s family farms, introduced legislation in September to close a trade loophole hurting farmers, and organized a Caucus meeting with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in October. Welch successfully worked with Vermont Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders to provide $350 million in emergency assistance to dairy farmers in fall 2009.

"Vermont’s agrarian way of life has been central to the state’s identity since its founding. As family farmers face unprecedented challenges, it is vital to our economy, our landscape, our sense of place and our culture that we do all we can to help them succeed. I will continue to fight for fair milk prices to help struggling dairy farmers compete, nutrition programs that keep children healthy while supporting local food production and renewable energy innovations that will bring new revenue to farms. House Committee Approves Farm Bill; Key Vermont Priorities Included

The House Agriculture Committee approved a Farm Bill this week on a bipartisan vote of 36-10.  The bill is expected to be debated by the full House of Representatives this summer.

U.S. Rep. Peter Welch says he hopes the farm bill will help stabilize milk prices for dairy farmers, include disaster insurance for vegetable growers and promote the use of local fruits and vegetables in school lunches.

Welch, a former member of the House Agriculture Committee, spoke Tuesday of his priorities for the farm bill, which is due to be discussed by the committee on Wednesday.

On Tuesday at the Intervale in Burlington, Congressman Peter Welch was joined by representatives of Vermont’s dairy farmers, vegetable growers, and nutrition advocates as he discussed the prospects for a Farm Bill in this Congress, as well as his priorities for the bill. The House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to take up the bill tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.  The Senate Agriculture Committee is taking up its version of the bill today.
